Happy Holidays!

Posted by kylistah on December 23, 2007

It’s been an interesting year with a lot of learning, new experiences, good and bad times. It doesn’t seem like 2007 has been a relaxing year at all and it flew by way too quickly.

May you all have great times throughout the Holidays with family and friends. For those of you who are traveling, please be safe.

From my family to yours, Happy Holidays. See you in 2008!

SWSoft Acquires WebHost Automation.

Posted by kylistah on December 20, 2007

I was quite surprised at first when I read the announcement today that SWSoft had acquired WebHost Automation, maker of the Helm Control Panel.

By integrating Helm into the SWsoft family of automation and virtualization solutions and partners through our Open Fusion initiative, Helm customers will be able to take advantage of a wider array of solutions and new business opportunities such as software as a service (SaaS),” said Serguei Beloussov, CEO of SWsoft.

So, this acquisition follows 3 automation software acquisitions that SWsoft made just months earlier  - Sphera, Ensim Pro and Positive Software. Could there be an IPO in the works?

cPanel next?  Nah!

Hell Has Froze Over.

Posted by kylistah on December 20, 2007

A co-worker and very good friend linked me to an article today that shows Internet Explorer 8 passed the acid2 test and is now more standards compliant than Mozilla. I didn’t believe him at first until I started reading. This is good news for web developers.
You can check out the Acid2 Browser Test here.

What the heck is co-locating WiFi and Radio?

Posted by kylistah on December 19, 2007

I came across an article recently that stated FCC documents reveal that a future Palm phone code-named Zeppelin has a feature set described as “co-locating WiFi and Radio.” I’m really curious to know what co-locating WiFi is! Being the type of person that Google’s away until I find my answers, I Google‘d for “co-locating WiFi”, which only brought up the links to the un-announced Palm device.

I could take a bunch of guesses and probably wind up way off base. Remember when Palm still knew how to innovate? If so, than this could speculate that “co-locating WiFi and Radio” could be something pretty cool. Maybe it’s a new type of location-aware service that could use both cell tower triangulation (ex: Google Maps Mobile’s Location service) plus knowledge about the location of a WiFi hot spot to pin-point your location.. or maybe…. oh the possibilities!

So, does anyone have any guesses as to what “co-locating WiFi and radio” could be?

SQL Enterprise Server Issues? Discover, Diagnose, and Resolve them with Spotlight

Posted by kylistah on December 13, 2007

I read a really great HowTo written by Joshua Hoskins this morning for Spotlight on SQL Server from Quest Software .

Spotlight is a tool to help SQL Server Database Administrator’s monitor the performance of their Microsoft SQL Servers, and be alerted when there are problems. It provides valuable information in an easily accessible format.

“This not only provides the data about operations going on in your SQL environment such as your cache hit ratio, and pages in memory, but also operating system level information such as disk queue length, page file usage, and all process running on the system, not just SQL processes.

This full featured program can monitor multiple SQL instances simultaneously (multiple simultaneous monitoring is only available in Enterprise edition) without the need to install software on your SQL Servers, though you will need a SQL Server to house your work databases.”

Read Joshua Hoskins’ HowTo here.
